COMPETITION RULES 

Competitors should be aged between 18 and 30 years on or before the 30th November preceding the award year (e.g. 30/11/2023 for the 2024 award year, etc). They must also:

1. Be resident or studying and/or on contract in Wales, or 

2. Have their main home in Wales, but are studying or on contract outside Wales.

Entrants should submit the entry fee of £3 along with 1-3 poems or a piece of fiction up to a maximum of 2500 words on any subject. For entrants submitting both poetry and fiction, the entry fee is £6.

All entries must be submitted via email to entry@cheval.wales by the 1st March 2024. Please include your entry in the body of the email following a brief biography of yourself (maximum of 40 words in the first person i.e I am… etc) 

All submissions must be the author’s own work and previously unpublished.

All rights remain with the author; however The Terry Hetherington Award reserves the right to publish exemplary pieces once, in the competition anthology, Cheval. They can also be added to the Cheval website. You cannot withdraw your entry after the closing date.

Entries will not be returned and the Judges’ decision is final.

Entries will be judged anonymously. Canvassing for any entry is forbidden and will result in that entry being disqualified. 

When the judges’ adjudication is complete the authors’ identities will then be revealed to the judges.

PRIZES

1. The overall winner prize of £1000.

2. Two runners up prizes, one for Fiction and one for Poetry, £500 each
